The current theatre, formed by horseshoe stalls with four orders of boxes and a gallery, was built on the same area of a previous theatre where, at the beginning of 1600 , plays were already performed. The ”Nobles’ Society”, constituted in the second half of 1700 in order to obtain the authorization from the King of Sardinia to build a new theatre, began the works in1785. The project was entrusted to Agostino Vitoli (active from 1781 to 1802) an architect coming from Spoleto. It was Inaugurated in 1791.
Some changes were made in the fi rst years of 1800.
Angelo Moja (Milan 1806-1880) painted the ceiling of the stalls, in trellis and stucco, with the representation of the Muses. The stucco caryatids that support the drapes of the royal box were carved by Abbondio Sangiorgio (Milan1798- 1879) on a pattern by Pelagio Pelagi (Bologna 1775-Turin 1860): the stucco decorations of the boxes were made by Leone Buzzi (who, in 1839, was working in Casale).
The “Nobles‘ Society” sold the theatre to the Town Council in 1861. In the second post-war period it was closed to public.
The theatre was reopened in 1990 after accurate restoration works.
