GOZANI DI SAN GIORGIO PALACE
Via Mameli 10
Monday-Friday 9.00am-6.00pm (courtyard and
staircase) Group tours of the palace on reservation.
The elegant building, partly rebuilt in 1775 on Count Filippo Nicolis De Robilant’s project (1723-1783) for the Gozani of San Giorgio family, was completed in 1778.
Since 1885 the palace has housed the Town Hall.
Its façade is divided in three orders with stuccoed windows. Above the portal, formed by twin columns, there is a balcony with a stone balustrade.
On the right, the entrance hall leads to an arcade, closed by a forged iron gate with the coat-of-arms of the Gozani family, where there are the busts of the mayors Oggero and Savio, a memorial tombstone to Giovanni Cabria, works by Bistolfi (1859- 1933) and the “tondo” in bronze to Carlo Bruna by Odoardo Tabacchi (1831-1909).
The vestibule, on the left of the entrance hall, leads to the main staircase with a vault embellished with stuccos.
Four marble cherubs, made by Giovan Battista Bernero (1736-1796) and representing the four seasons, decorate the balustrade, in marble as well. From the landing we enter the ballroom which is now used as Council Room.
On the vault there is a fresco by the painter Francesco Lorenzi from Verona (1723.1787) representing Apollo with Pegasus and the Muses, the paintings of the friezes and baseboards are by Guidolini.
In other rooms of the palace there are frescoes and paintings over the doors by Lorenzi and some fireplaces and furniture of the 18th century designed by Lorenzo Marini (documented from 1769 to1798).
A wing of the palace still preserves a ceiling frescoed
by Pietro Francesco Guala (1698-1757) representing Bacchus and Arianna welcomed in heavens by Venus and Cupid.
