    CIVIC TOWER

    Torre Civica

    CIVIC TOWER
    Via Saffi
opening at the weekends of “Casale Città Aperta”
It is a square shaped building made of bricks and lighted by little lancets. The lower part dates back to the 11th century, the upper part to the 16th century and so does the belfry which hosts two bells bearing well-wishing words. Guglielmo IX Paleologo and Anna d’Alencon wanted both this addition and the complex mechanism of the clock, thus showing their interest in art and technique, but they also wanted to put their heraldic device on the symbol of the town autonomy. In 1567 Casale witnessed a plot against
Guglielmo Gonzaga; Oliviero Capello, with other nobles and clergymen, took part in it. At the end of the tragic event the conspirators’ heads were hung on the Tower. The Tower was last restored in 1985.
